The development of NIS+ for Linux has stopped some time ago. There are still people asking for it, but I don't have the time and resources to continue the development.

The status of the NIS+ API is, that all functions are implemented. This NIS+ functions will work best with GNU libc >= 2.1.3.

For using Linux as NIS+ client, you have to edit /etc/nsswitch.conf and create a /var/nis/NIS_COLD_START file. Since this file is byte order independend, you could copy it from a Solaris client or generate one with nisinit.

There is no NIS+ server for Linux and it doesn't look like that there will ever be one.

The main ftp site for the Linux NIS+ source collection is You will always find there the latest versions and patches, since this WWW page isn't always up to date. Please look there at first if one of the links on this pages are not longer valid or if you have other problems with the software.
